The establishment offers lap dances and customers can purchase champagne room access and additional "girlfriend experience" services. Sean Baker's camera doesn't linger on this domestic accounting, but it doesn't have to. The entire movie follows a pattern which shows all expenses and reveals who must bear the financial burden.
Ani performs at a Manhattan strip club which operates with basic financial principles because customers purchase both their time and close distance and the simulated act of physical closeness. She's good at her job. Mikey Madison delivers her character with a friendly demeanor which never reveals her true emotions through her eyes. The client receives his money when she says "Just gimme my money, already" while maintaining a pleasant expression which makes it clear that the deal is finished.
Then Vanya arrives. Mark Eydelshteyn plays him as a kind of chaos gremlin, a 21-year-old Russian oligarch's son who treats money like it's something that simply happens to him. He offers Ani fifteen grand to be his live-in girlfriend for a week. Later, Vegas. A private jet. A four-carat ring which most likely exceeded her yearly housing expenses. Baker films the McMansion Vanya rattles around in with the same matter-of-fact eye he brings to Ani's shared apartment. The two objects function as storage spaces which hold the existence of their contained lives. One happens to have ocean views.
The film delivers its painful impact because Ani demonstrates no signs of being naive. She knows the terms. She has dedicated multiple years to determine the monetary value of her body and time when she positions herself in different ways. The marriage functions as a strategic investment which uses another person's resources to achieve its goals. "She maintains that everything she experiences is genuine when all her world begins to collapse. "This is mine."Madison presents her argument with the same confidence that someone would use when protecting their investment strategy.
Baker shows no signs of mocking her regarding this matter. The concept stayed in my thoughts from start to finish of the work. Plenty of films would treat Ani's ambition as delusion, would frame the whole thing as a cautionary tale about knowing your station. The comedy emerges from the ineptitude of the fixers whom Vanya's parents deploy to dissolve the marriage rather than from Ani's desire to acquire wealth.
The three men tasked with handling her are wonderfully useless. Toros has served as the local handler who has spent multiple years to clean up the problems Vanya created. His assistants Garnick and Igor have the energy of guys who thought they were being hired for light security work and are now genuinely unsure what their job description covers. Yura Borisov plays Igor who observes Ani with attention while all others in the room focus on her as a problem to fix.
People find their failure to finish work assignments endearing because of this particular trait. No guns get drawn. No real threats get made. The middle managers of dysfunction attempt to execute an annulment process through methods which resemble those used for cable company service cancellations. The violence never comes, which is itself a kind of statement. The film knows what usually happens to women like Ani in stories like this and simply refuses to provide it.
The program provides an enhanced learning experience which exceeds what the original content offered. Vanya runs. Of course he does. He's never had to stay for anything difficult in his life. The parents of the character travel from Moscow to meet their son and his mother only meets Ani for the first time during this scene which Madison performs with such intense dedication that it caused me to feel deep sadness.
The oligarch's wife examines Ani like a line item that needs correcting, and you can see Ani realising, finally, that she was never really a person in this story at all. The system received incorrect financial data from another user who entered it into their system.
The story ends with a combination of positive hope and total mental exhaustion. The final images Baker creates through his work present themselves as frozen moments which create more questions than they answer. The audience remained completely silent after watching this film in the cinema. Ani regains control of her existence although it becomes a modified version of her previous life. The result between winning and losing depends on the first amount she should have received.
I stepped outside the building to consider the factors which establish product prices. The worth of one service amounts to fifteen thousand dollars until multiple customers try to buy it which makes the service completely worthless. About what it means to sell something and have the buyer refuse delivery.
Anyway. Bring tissues.
